Petrel 1

Petrel was a solid-fuel rocket built by Bristol Aerojet. Launch made use of three Chic engines at take-off for extra boost, with the Lapwing main engine providing continuous thrust for 30 seconds.

Petrel measured 11 feet in length (3.3 m) with a diameter 7.4 inches (19 cm), weighing 81 Ibs (36.7kg) and was launched from a 33 foot long (10 m) tube. The rocket could, depending on configuration carry payloads of between 39.655.1 lbs (18-25 kg) to corresponding altitudes of 86.9 93.2 miles (140-115 km). The first launch was on June 8, 1967 from South Uist in the Hebrides Archipelago. The rocket had the innovative feature of recoverable and reusable boosters.

When the Petrel programme was finally terminated in 1982, the rocket in various configurations had made 234 successful flights.
